Inspiration: Nick Knight

For a unit in which I'm to produce an essay in college I'm  to discuss a genre of photography and how the industry has changed within the last 30 or so years.  I've chosen fashion photographer Nick Knight  to discuss due to a previous interest in his work and a chance to broaden my knowledge of some of the work that he has produced. I particularly like Knight's ability to adapt to new technologies, as well as his work to help break down social stigmas involving shoots with disabled, transgender and survivors of breast cancer.

I loved Knight's approach to the work for Yohji Yamamoto's catalogue. The use of the silhouette really helps to make the clothing standout as well as the use of the bold red and blacks on a white background. Shot back in 1987, this is a great example of Knight's work before technologies such as photoshop were around and shows his skill as a photographer.

The 'Access-able' shots for Dazed & Confused magazine show models with various disabilities shown in a typical fashion way. I find the way in which Knight captured his subjects as he would any other model to be refreshing.

The collection of WHAAM! images show that Nick Knight is once again adapting to future technologies by including messages and emoticons typical of what are found on the Apple iPhone. The images are very vibrant with an almost 'pop-art' feel to them and based around comic books. The way in which they have been post-processed almost makes it seem as if they're no longer a photograph but something more.

Taking these points into account highlights the reasons why I enjoy Knight's work as a Fashion Photographer. His ever-changing style and use of technology and the work he has produced countering stereotypical views of members of society.
