I'm seeing stars.

Recently at college I've been focusing on my painting with light project. The brief involved choosing a product and creating an advertisement utilising the skill of light painting.

I chose a shoe to advertise which had been hand painted with a Galaxy print, this inspired my the space theme behind my advert.

The process of shooting the background was quite trail and error, I experimented with different techniques and different materials to use with various light sources.

My first experiment involved the use of incense smoke with a flash gun fired from behind and various coloured gels attached.

As you can see, the images worked quite well, however I felt this would look too much like smoke to use for my image as I was trying to recreate the look of Nebula clouds. The image would also not fit the brief as I had fired a flash rather than use light painting as the source of lighting.

My next experiment involved a glowstick and a plastic bag to act as a diffuser and to create a bigger and movable light source which I would capture with a slower shutter speed to blur the movement. I captured stars in the image by using a piece of black board with perforations whilst I lit it from behind with LED torches with coloured gels attached.

In conclusion, I feel that with this module I have investigated a source of lighting that I would probably not have used in such a manner to create an image that I'm pleased with. I feel like the image helped in the improvement of my lighting and post production skills.

After receiving feedback from presenting a rough draft of my image to my lecturer and classmates at college I decided to reshoot my initial images of the selected shoe by itself. I used flash to light the image as I felt that it would give a cleaner end result and would make the shoe look brighter and sharper in comparison to the background of the image.
